2010 Annual Fund
Sitting on the steps in front of the San Diego Archaeological Center one foggy morning I could almost hear and feel the past. I heard the sounds of Stephen Watts Kearny’s men as they slowly descended from the hills to the south to met death at the hands of Andres Pico’s forces. Closer to the Center I saw the San Pasqual Indian Cemetery and thought of the lives of the Ipai people who once lived in this valley and knew its mysteries. Out towards the river I could imagine the small ponds that once shimmered there and the native plants that grew across what is now fertile farmland. In the Center itself the artifacts that transcend material culture and echo the vibrant cultures that have shaped our prehistory and history are waiting to be studied and understood. There are few places in southern California where you can directly experience the past. The San Diego Archaeological Center is one of those unique places and you have a chance to be part of it.
You can help to ensure that the voices of the past are heard loud and clear and that our mutual connection to the earth and to our humanity continues through a donation to the San Diego Archaeological Center’s Annual Fund. This time of the year you may receive many worthy letters asking for your donation and support-- I would ask that you consider this. Virtually no other request for your support enables you to help preserve the past, to educate our children for their future, and to provide a place where we can all enjoy the rich cultural diversity of our region. Our collaboration with local Indian tribes, universities, and other institutions provides a setting for learning, understanding, and preservation. At the Center there is an immediate and ongoing need to ensure the protection of the irreplaceable material evidence of our region’s rich cultural heritage and to share it with the public.
Your support is needed today to continue the important work of the Center. We encourage you to donate this year. In uncertain economic times all of us have to make decisions about how we spend our money and evaluate what really matters to us. I hope that you decide that the Center is important to you and that you know that you can personally ensure its continued growth and success.
A gift to the Center’s Annual Fund helps to support day-to-day operations, and to maintain and expand Center collections, educational programming, new exhibits and public programming. You may direct your gift to an area of interest that is particularly meaningful to you.
Strategic priorities are designed by Center staff and trustees to direct funding to the most urgent present and future organizational needs of infrastructure, programs, exhibits, facilities, and outreach. The impact of your donation can be seen very quickly as funds are dedicated for the areas of greatest need to ensure the stability and effectiveness of our organization. If you have visited the Center in the past year you saw how we made excellent use of our resources and rose to the challenges of funding cuts. Today the Center is stronger and better because of what many of our supporters did last year and we sincerely hope that you can make that effort once again.
Please make a tax-deductible donation to the San Diego Archaeological Center’s Annual Fund by donating below on this page. You will have made a valuable contribution to our community, as together we preserve and share a past that is uniquely ours. If you can’t find the time to sit on the steps with me and savor the past, please take a moment to make a donation that will ensure that others walk up those steps and into a fuller understanding of our rich cultural diversity.
Sincerely,Richard L. Carrico
