Geographic Information System (GIS)
The Collections and Research Department at the SDAC have successfully integrated Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with our curation procedures. More than 95% of the archaeological collections at the Center have been assigned spatial information. We are diligently working to add site data including site chronology, site types, and artifacts and ecofacts found within the sites.
The Center’s growing GIS program has been especially attractive to GIS student interns from local community colleges and universities. Over the past year, six interns have successfully completed the GIS Internship program. These students have been able to use the Center’s archaeological data for their classroom projects and have contributed to populating our spatial information databases. They are also gaining rewarding hands-on experience that will benefit them in the workplace. Specific on-going and planned research projects.
