Reference Collections Project
Reference collections are a valuable teaching tool for staff, interns, and volunteers. These collections contain examples of the hundreds of different artifacts, both prehistoric and historic, in our collection. The collections are especially helpful to student interns in securing employment after they receive their degree. Reference collections help to properly identify artifacts, which increases their future research and educational potential.
On #GivingTuesday, the SDAC raised $6,280 to expand the reference collections in the Collections Department Lab. Thank you to all our donors who helped us surpass our goal!
In 2020, the Collections Department plans to
- Expand and complete the shell and geology collections
- Transfer the bottle collection to a display case or cabinet for better accessibility
- Create a stone tool collection and an animal-bone collection
- Photograph and digitize these collections for online access
To complete this project, the Center will provide paid internships to local students to assist with the collections.
